Is it word for word?
The publisher calls the base text formal equivalent, that is word-for-word, and then adds amplifications in brackets and parentheses. The literal-to-idiomatic meter above shows where readers place its feel.
What are the brackets and parentheses?
Parentheses give the definition of a word in context; brackets, or gray text in the newer layout, add clarifying information; italics mark words implied but not in the original. The publisher says the text reads with or without the amplifications.
Is it a paraphrase?
No by the publisher’s own description: it says the Amplified Bible is a formal-equivalent translation that expands meaning directly from the original languages rather than rephrasing the text.
What text is it based on?
The publisher’s pages say the amplifications are based on the Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek, but name no edition of the Hebrew or Greek text. The textual basis is marked not published above.
Which text do most printings carry?
New printings carry the 2015 text. The 1987 text is sold as the Amplified Bible Classic (AMPC) in some print editions and in digital formats; the copyright page names the edition.
