Editorial

We describe each dispute, attribute each position, and take no side.

The permanent text of 2016

In August 2016 Crossway announced that the ESV text, after a small set of changes, would remain unchanged in all future editions. Crossway’s statement of 28 September 2016 says the aim was a stable text for reading, memorising, preaching and liturgy; it then says the decision was a mistake, apologises for the concern it caused readers, and says future updates would be minimal and infrequent. In 2025 the committee changed some of the 2016 wording again, for example returning Genesis 3:16 from “contrary to” to the 2001 reading “for”. Readers who wanted a fixed text and readers who wanted continued revision both appear in Crossway’s account; we take no side.

Verses in footnotes

Some verses printed in the KJV, such as Matthew 17:21, appear in ESV footnotes (“Some manuscripts insert verse 21”) rather than the main text, because the ESV follows a different Greek text. Readers who hold to the Textus Receptus regard this as an omission; the preface says the footnotes show how textual variations were resolved by the translation team.

Perguntas frequentes

Answered from the spec sheet and the positions above, never from the meters.

Is it word for word?

Yes by the publisher’s own description, “essentially literal”, which it contrasts with thought-for-thought translation. The literal-to-idiomatic meter above shows where readers place its feel.

What text is it based on?

The Masoretic Text as printed in Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia (5th edition) for the Old Testament, and the UBS Greek New Testament (5th corrected edition) with the Nestle-Aland 28th edition for the New Testament, with the 1971 RSV as the starting point of the English.

Are verses missing?

Some verses printed in the KJV appear in footnotes instead of the main text, because the ESV follows a different Greek text. The text is complete by its own textual basis. See the disputes panel.

Which text do most printings carry?

The 2016 text until the 2025 update reaches all editions; Crossway says almost all print editions will carry the 2025 text by fall 2026. The permissions notice names the text edition on the copyright page.

Is it approved for Catholic use?

No. The ESV has the 66-book Protestant canon and no imprimatur. The ESV Catholic Edition is a separate listing with its own approvals.

Who translated it?

The Translation Oversight Committee, described in the preface as fourteen members with more than fifty review scholars and an advisory council of more than fifty; Crossway says more than 100 scholars and pastors took part. The committee is a standing committee of the Crossway board.
