Controvérsias e contexto
EditorialWe describe each dispute, attribute each position, and take no side.
Gender language
The 2011 revision renders some words that refer to people in general with gender-inclusive English, for example “brothers and sisters” where the Greek has adelphoi. Critics, including the Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood, say this changes meaning in some passages. The Committee on Bible Translation says it reflects current English usage and leaves language about God unchanged.
Verses in footnotes
Some verses printed in the KJV, such as Matthew 17:21 and Acts 8:37, appear in NIV footnotes rather than the main text, because the NIV follows a different Greek text. Readers who hold to the Textus Receptus regard this as an omission; the committee regards it as following the earliest manuscripts.

Perguntas frequentes
Answered from the spec sheet and the positions above, never from the meters.
Is the NIV accurate, and what does accuracy mean here?
“Accurate” means different things to different readers: close to the wording, close to the sense, or based on a particular Greek text. The NIV aims between word-for-word and thought-for-thought and follows an eclectic Greek text. The disputes panel describes where readers disagree. We do not score accuracy.
Is it word for word?
No. The publisher describes it as a balance between word-for-word and thought-for-thought. The literal-to-idiomatic meter above shows where readers place its feel.
What text is it based on?
The Masoretic Text as printed in Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia for the Old Testament, and an eclectic Greek text drawing on the Nestle-Aland and UBS editions for the New Testament.
Are verses missing?
Some verses printed in the KJV appear in footnotes instead of the main text, because the NIV follows a different Greek text. The text is complete by its own textual basis.
Is it approved for Catholic use?
No. It has the 66-book Protestant canon and no imprimatur. For editions with Catholic approval, see the NABRE, the RSV Catholic Edition and the ESV Catholic Edition.
Who translated it?
The Committee on Bible Translation, a self-governing body of 15 scholars from several denominations, sponsored by Biblica.
