Verses in footnotes
Some verses printed in the KJV, such as Matthew 17:21, appear in NLT footnotes (“Some manuscripts add verse 21”) rather than the main text, because the NLT follows a different Greek text. Readers who hold to the Textus Receptus regard this as an omission; Tyndale’s FAQ says the earlier manuscripts preserve a text closer to the original writings than the manuscripts behind the Textus Receptus.

Is it word for word?
No. The publisher describes it as dynamic equivalence, also called thought-for-thought or meaning-based, and says it translated literally where that was clear and more dynamically where it was not. The literal-to-idiomatic meter above shows where readers place its feel.
What text is it based on?
The Masoretic Text as printed in Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia (1977) for the Old Testament, and the UBS Greek New Testament (4th revised edition) with the Nestle-Aland 27th edition for the New Testament.
Are verses missing?
Some verses printed in the KJV appear in footnotes instead of the main text, because the NLT follows a different Greek text. The text is complete by its own textual basis. See the disputes panel.
How does it handle gender language?
Where a passage addresses all believers the Greek “brothers” is rendered “brothers and sisters”, and plural pronouns replace the masculine singular where the text applies to people in general. Language about God is unchanged.
Is it approved for Catholic use?
No. The standard NLT has the 66-book Protestant canon and no imprimatur. Tyndale’s FAQ also refers to an NLT Catholic Edition; check that edition’s own approval before relying on it.
Who translated it?
The Bible Translation Committee, more than 90 scholars from several evangelical denominations working with English stylists, with each book assigned to three scholars. Tyndale publishes the names.
