Editorial

We describe each dispute, attribute each position, and take no side.

The Vulgate as the basis

The Douay-Rheims was translated from the Latin Vulgate rather than from the Hebrew and Greek. Baronius Press and the Douay-Rheims Bible Online say the Council of Trent declared the Vulgate the Church’s authentic text in 1546, and that Jerome’s Latin reflects the structure of the original languages closely. Newer Catholic translations take the other view in practice: the bishops’ preface to the New American Bible says that after Pius XII’s 1943 encyclical the translators abandoned work based on the Vulgate and translated from the Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic, and the Augustine Institute says the ESV Catholic Edition is translated directly from more reliable manuscripts than older English translations. Readers who prefer the Douay-Rheims value its fidelity to the Vulgate; readers of the newer translations value the original-language texts.

Perguntas frequentes

Answered from the spec sheet and the positions above, never from the meters.

What text is it based on?

The Latin Vulgate, in the Clementine edition, for both Testaments. The disputes panel describes the disagreement over translating from the Vulgate rather than the Hebrew and Greek.

Is it word for word?

Yes by Baronius Press’s description, which calls it a quite literal translation of the Vulgate. The literal-to-idiomatic meter shows where readers place its feel.

Is it approved for Catholic use?

Yes. It has the 73-book Catholic canon, and the 1899 edition that current printings reproduce carries the imprimatur of Cardinal Gibbons, Archbishop of Baltimore.

Which text do most printings carry?

The Challoner revision of 1749 to 1752, usually as printed in the 1899 Baltimore edition. The 1582 and 1609 originals are reprinted for study and differ in spelling and wording.

Who translated it?

Members of the English College at Douai, principally Gregory Martin, in the sixteenth century; Bishop Richard Challoner revised the text in the eighteenth.
