Controvérsias e contexto

Editorial

We describe each dispute, attribute each position, and take no side.

The Textus Receptus and the footnotes

The NKJV keeps the verses of the Textus Receptus in the main text, so verses such as Matthew 17:21 stay in place, and marks in footnotes where the critical text (NU-Text) and the Majority Text (M-Text) differ. The preface says the editors chose to retain the traditional text and show the variants so readers can see them. Translations from an eclectic Greek text place some of these verses in footnotes instead; both positions are described, with sources, in the guide on verses in footnotes.

Perguntas frequentes

Answered from the spec sheet and the positions above, never from the meters.

Is it word for word?

Yes by the publisher’s own description, “complete equivalence”, which the preface contrasts with dynamic equivalence. The literal-to-idiomatic meter above shows where readers place its feel.

What text is it based on?

The Masoretic Text in the 1967/1977 Stuttgart edition of the Biblia Hebraica for the Old Testament, and the Textus Receptus, the Greek text behind the King James Version, for the New Testament, with critical and Majority Text variants in footnotes.

Are verses missing?

No. The Textus Receptus verses are in the main text; footnotes say where the critical text omits them, for example “NU omits v. 21” at Matthew 17:21.

Is it approved for Catholic use?

No. It has the 66-book Protestant canon and no imprimatur.

Who translated it?

130 scholars, church leaders and lay Christians commissioned by Thomas Nelson in 1975, working for seven years. The publisher’s pages checked do not list their names.
