Disputes and context

Editorial

We describe each dispute, attribute each position, and take no side.

Verses in footnotes

Some verses printed in the Reina-Valera 1960, such as Acts 8:37, are not in the main text of Dios Habla Hoy, because it follows the oldest manuscripts rather than the Textus Receptus. Readers who hold to the Textus Receptus regard this as an omission; Sociedades Bíblicas Unidas says such passages are found only in later manuscripts.

The standing questions

Answered from the spec sheet and the positions above, never from the meters.

Is it word for word?

No. The publisher describes it as dynamic or functional equivalence: the sense of the original in clear contemporary Spanish. The literal-to-idiomatic meter above shows where readers place its feel.

What text is it based on?

The Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek originals, translated directly. The publisher’s page names no printed edition.

Are verses missing?

Some verses printed in the Reina-Valera 1960 are not in the main text, because Dios Habla Hoy follows the oldest manuscripts. The text is complete by its own textual basis.

Is it approved for Catholic use?

The standard edition has 66 books. The publisher says the edition with the Deuterocanon carries an imprimatur and a recommendation from the General Secretary of CELAM; see the positions above.

Who translated it?

A committee of translators of Sociedades Bíblicas Unidas. The publisher’s page does not name them.

Which text do most printings carry?

The third edition (1996) is the text Sociedades Bíblicas Unidas licenses to Bible Gateway; the first edition of the full Bible was 1979 and the second 1983.
