Approved for publication; private use and study

The bishops' conference announced that the revised edition was approved for publication, with the canonical rescript signed by its president on September 30, 2010. The standing questions

Answered from the spec sheet and the positions above, never from the meters.

Is it word for word?

The bishops call it a formal equivalent translation, and the preface says the revised Old Testament is more literal than the 1970 text. The literal-to-idiomatic meter shows where readers place its feel.

What text is it based on?

The Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek texts in their best-known editions for the Old Testament, with departures to the Septuagint or Qumran manuscripts recorded in the notes. The bishops’ site does not post the 1986 New Testament preface, so its Greek edition is not recorded here.

Is it approved for Catholic use?

Yes. The bishops’ conference approved it for publication in 2010 and lists it as approved for private use and study. The readings at Mass in the United States use an earlier, modified form of the New American Bible.

Who translated it?

Revisers and editors working for the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine: forty revisers and eight editors for the Old Testament, thirty revisers and six editors for the 1991 Psalms, and thirteen revisers and five editors for the 1986 New Testament.

Which text do most printings carry?

Bibles printed since 2011 carry the revised edition: the revised Old Testament and Psalms with the 1986 New Testament. The bishops say a successor, the Catholic American Bible, is expected in 2027.
