Disputes and context

Editorial

We describe each dispute, attribute each position, and take no side.

The Textus Receptus and the critical text

The RVC keeps the Reina-Valera’s Textus Receptus readings but prints those found only in later manuscripts in brackets, with a note pointing to the critical text. Readers who hold to the Textus Receptus regard the brackets and notes as casting doubt on verses they consider original; Sociedades Bíblicas Unidas says the notes report that more than 3,000 older Greek manuscripts lack those words, while the traditional text stays on the page.

The standing questions

Answered from the spec sheet and the positions above, never from the meters.

Is it word for word?

It is a revision of the Reina-Valera, a literal translation, in current Latin American Spanish; the publisher describes the changes as updated words, Spanish word order and clearer hard passages, not a new approach. The literal-to-idiomatic meter above shows where readers place its feel.

What text is it based on?

The Reina-Valera text. The New Testament keeps the Textus Receptus base; readings found only in later manuscripts are bracketed, with notes referring to the critical text.

Are verses missing?

No. Verses such as Acts 8:37 stay in the main text, in brackets, with a footnote saying they are found only in late manuscripts. The disputes panel describes the disagreement.

Is it approved for Catholic use?

No. It has the 66-book Protestant canon and no imprimatur. For Spanish editions with Catholic approval, see the Biblia de Jerusalén and the Biblia Latinoamérica.

Who translated it?

Sociedades Bíblicas Unidas revised the Reina-Valera over more than sixteen years and presented the RVC in 2011. The publisher’s pages do not name the revisers.
