Disputes and context

Editorial

We describe each dispute, attribute each position, and take no side.

The Textus Receptus and the 1960 text

Readers who hold to the Textus Receptus regard the Reina-Valera 1960 as the standard Spanish Bible because it keeps the Textus Receptus verses in its main text. The Bible societies that publish it have since issued revisions and translations from an eclectic Greek text (the Reina Valera Contemporánea, Dios Habla Hoy), and the Sociedad Bíblica Chilena says the Textus Receptus does not belong to the most reliable families of manuscripts. Both positions are described, with sources, in the guide on textual basis.

The standing questions

Answered from the spec sheet and the positions above, never from the meters.

Is it word for word?

Yes by the publisher’s description: a direct, literal translation in classical Spanish. The 1960 revision updated diction and grammar and kept the style. The literal-to-idiomatic meter shows where readers place its feel.

What text is it based on?

The Masoretic Text for the Old Testament and the Textus Receptus for the New Testament, as the Reina-Valera line has followed them since 1569.

Are verses missing?

No. The Textus Receptus verses, such as Acts 8:37 and 1 John 5:7, are in the main text. Translations from an eclectic Greek text put some of them in footnotes; the disputes panel describes the disagreement.

Is it approved for Catholic use?

No. It has the 66-book Protestant canon and no imprimatur. For Spanish editions with Catholic approval, see the Biblia de Jerusalén and the Biblia Latinoamérica.

Who translated it?

Casiodoro de Reina translated the 1569 Bible and Cipriano de Valera revised it in 1602. The 1960 revision was made by a committee of evangelical church leaders from Latin America under Sociedades Bíblicas Unidas, with more than 140 consultants.

Which text do most printings carry?

The 1960 text; it has not been revised under this name. The 1909 and 1995 revisions of the Reina-Valera are sold as separate editions (RVR1909, RVR95).
