Translation approach explanation

"Fairly literal", the FAQ's term; the editors describe translation as a balancing act between the meaning of each sentence, the meaning of each word in context and good English, and keep the trustworthy character of the ASV 1901

Verification pending
Old Testament textual basis

Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia (Masoretic Text), with the American Standard Version of 1901 as the English base

Verification pending
New Testament textual basis

Byzantine Majority Text (Robinson-Pierpont and Hodges-Farstad editions), not the Textus Receptus; differences from the Nestle-Aland/UBS text and from the Textus Receptus are footnoted

Verification pending
Canon and included books

66 books in the Protestant editions; the standard Ecumenical edition adds the Deuterocanon/Apocrypha between the Testaments; a Catholic edition uses the Catholic book set and order

Verification pending
Gender-related language approach

Keeps, in most cases, the ASV 1901's use of "he" where the word may mean he or she; lower-case pronouns for God

The standing questions

Answered from the spec sheet and the positions above, never from the meters.

Is it word for word?

The editor calls it fairly literal. The FAQ describes a balance between the meaning of each sentence, the meaning of each word and good English, keeping the character of the ASV 1901. The literal-to-idiomatic meter shows where readers place its feel.

What text is it based on?

The American Standard Version of 1901 as the English base, checked against Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia for the Old Testament and the Byzantine Majority Text for the New Testament.

Are verses missing?

It follows the Majority Text, not the Textus Receptus. Readings found only in the Textus Receptus, such as Acts 8:37 and the longer 1 John 5:7, are in footnotes marked TR. Where the Nestle-Aland/UBS text differs, footnotes marked NU say so.

Is it approved for Catholic use?

No. It has no imprimatur. eBible.org publishes a Catholic edition with the Catholic book set and order and “LORD” for the divine name; that is a choice of books, not Church approval.

Who translated it?

Michael Paul Johnson, as senior editor and main translator, with volunteers from many churches. eBible.org publishes no list of contributors.

Can I copy it?

Yes. The text is public domain. The name “World English Bible” is a trademark, so a changed text may not carry it.
