"As exact a translation as possible" for "the simple and unlearned reader" (1890 introductory notice), keeping the style of the Authorised Version where consistent with that exactness; words added to complete the English sense are in square brackets
Verification pending- Old Testament textual basis
"The common Hebrew text" (Masoretic), collated with Darby's German and French versions; Darby revised the first few books before his death and the rest was completed from his work (1890 introductory notice). The divine name is rendered "Jehovah"
Verification pending- New Testament textual basis
Critical editions of the Greek text: the first edition followed "the concurrent voice of Griesbach, Lachmann, Scholz, and Tischendorf", keeping the received text where they disagreed; the revised edition also used the Sinaitic and Vatican manuscripts, Tischendorf's seventh edition, Alford, Meyer and De Wette. Words with manuscript variation are in square brackets

The standing questions
Answered from the spec sheet and the positions above, never from the meters.
Is it word for word?
Darby’s stated aim was as exact a translation as possible for the unlearned reader, keeping the Authorised Version’s style where that allowed. He meant it for study, not for reading aloud. The literal-to-idiomatic meter shows where readers place its feel.
What text is it based on?
The common Hebrew text for the Old Testament, collated with Darby’s German and French versions. For the New Testament, the critical Greek editions of his day: Griesbach, Lachmann, Scholz and Tischendorf at first, then the Sinaitic and Vatican manuscripts and later editors in the revised edition.
Are verses missing?
Darby followed critical editions rather than the Textus Receptus, so some verses printed in the KJV, such as Acts 8:37, are not in the main text, and words with manuscript variation stand in square brackets. His 1871 preface discusses the readings he weighed.
Who translated it?
John Nelson Darby alone. The Old Testament was completed after his death from his work on the Hebrew text and his German and French versions.
Why does it say Jehovah?
The introductory notice says the names of God are kept as far as possible according to the original: “Jehovah” and “Jah” where the Hebrew has them, and “Lord” for Adonai, to let the reader tell the names apart.
